Freshman Hagen Graves stays busy year-round as a wrestler, track athlete, cross-country runner, and construction worker. At just 14 years old, Graves balances school, multiple sports, and a job working for his stepfather’s construction company, showing dedication both on and off the mat.
Wrestling stands at the center of Graves’ athletic career. The sport challenges him physically and mentally, which is what first drew him in.
“Because it is both a physical and mental sport. You learn from victory and failure. And I like to win,” Graves said.
Graves competes during the winter season but continues training throughout the year while also participating in track and cross country. During track season last year, he faced a setback that tested his resilience.
“Yes, last year in track I tore my hamstring in the 100 dash,” Graves said.
Despite the injury, Graves continues to compete in multiple sports, demonstrating commitment and perseverance.
Outside of athletics, Graves works for his stepfather’s construction company, earning $50 an hour. The hands-on experience has sparked ideas for the future.
“If I had to start my own, it would probably be called Braids Construction,” Graves said.
Graves has also experienced life in different states, having lived in both Kansas and Florida. Although he currently resides in Kansas, he prefers the coastal lifestyle.
“I would pick to stay in Florida because I like the beach, swimming in the ocean, and the seafood,” Graves said.
At home, Graves spends time with his golden retriever and German shepherd. He describes his dog as energetic and playful.
“My dog shows more of the golden retriever because he’s more playful and likes to be in the water,” Graves said.
Coming from a split family, Graves understands that challenges can shape a person’s character. Still, he holds onto positive memories, including a trip to a water park in Oklahoma.
“Yes, I can’t remember what it’s called, but there was this water park in Oklahoma that we went to,” Graves said.
Whether competing on the mat, racing on the track, working construction, or riding his street bike, Graves continues to push himself. His dedication reflects the mindset that drives him forward: learning from both victory and failure—and always aiming to win.
