The streets of Kansas City aren’t just pavement, they’re a training ground. From the first spark of an 8th grade ollie to the perfect ground at Mexa, the focus of a session provides a satisfaction that only another skateboarder can truly understand.
For sophomore Gavin Gonzalis, that feeling is exactly what keeps the board under his feet. It really just comes down to that one specific moment of success.
“It took me over two years to land my first heel flip,” said Gonzalis
Starting early can really get you into a sport, Gonsalis wasn’t the earliest starter, but he stays consistent.
“I started in 8th grade,” said Gonzalis, “I skate a few times a week”
Having passion for a hobby can sometimes be hard to find, Gavin had his own way of being motivated.
“It’s fun landing tricks that I’m pretty good at,” said Gonzalis
Inspiration is a key part of having a new hobby, having a good influence can really boost your love for a hobby.
“I like Sean Malto because he was from the Kansas city area,” said Gonzalis, “Both my dad and my pure will inspired me to start.”
Getting that perfect stance can help you thrive, but finding out what stance is the hard part.
“I use a regular stance,” Gonzalis said, “It’s just my preference,” he said “I think it just suits me more.”
That perfect spot to skate can be hard to come by, Gonzalis found where he truly enjoyed being.
“Mexa has the best area, everything is just perfect there, the ground, the park…” said Gonzalis
Finding that perfect board can really upstart your passion.
“I use primitive,” Gonsalis said, “Because they feel comfy.”
Having that superb song on while you ride can really help you focus, but having other skaters there can also make it enjoyable.
“I like focusing with music, there is no distraction, but it’s good to have other people around just chilling,” said Gonzalis
