The Winter Pep Assembly was held on Friday, December 13, 2013 and kicked off the winter sports season with a bang. It began with the alma mater and fight song and then a special performance by the Blazerettes dance team.

The winter sports season is filled with wrestling tournaments, basketball games for both boys and girls, as well as bowling meets.

“I think the pep assembly went really well,” said senior class president Jake Mcintire. “It was my favorite assembly so far.”

Following the dance team’s performance, the teachers challenged the boys basketball team to a game of knock out. Although eventually defeated, the teachers put up a fight. Vice Principal Heather Peeke remained as the sole teacher until finally being knocked out in the last round. Teachers Deb Osborn and Mike Zegers also participated in a competition in which they had to find gum in a pile of whip cream. Being the first to blow a successful bubble, Osborn defeated Zegers.

The sculpture classes, under the guidance of teacher Tom Wilson, revealed an obelisk representing “Ubuntu.” Wilson explained its importance and referenced Nelson Mandela, a famous anti-apartheid from South Africa, who followed this philosophy. “Ubuntu” is the quality including essential human virtues such as compassion and humanity. The sculpture will be displayed in the commons to remind students of the example of “Ubuntu” and inspire them to do the right thing, according to one of the students who worked on the sculpture.

Rounding out the events, the crowd was serenaded by boys basketball coach Jeff Langrehr and his rendition of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball,” followed by a performance from the cheer squad. Ending with the alma mater and fight song, the winter sports season has officially started and GEHS is ready to cheer the teams to victory.
