Cats, dogs, mice, monkeys, and more are subjected to terrible treatments and diseases, all for the sake of human knowledge. They do not get a say in any component of their life and must put up with it till death. Animal testing needs to be stopped, as there are other options, it’s not reliable, and it’s unethical.
There is no need to test on animals when today’s technology has come far enough that human cells and tissues can be simulated and made in a lab. According to Cruelty Free International, non-animal methods are cheaper, quicker, and overall better. Human and Animal cells can be made in a lab and even be used to make miniature organs for testing. Computers can do almost anything nowadays days and that includes simulating the human body and making predictions about how it will react.
Quite often, the results gathered from animal testing are not accurate for human biology.
Many vaccines can cure an animal but fail to work on humans. According to PETA, a majority of animal testing does not even go towards human health. When some mice were put in different types of cages and environments, they reacted differently, showing the unpredictability in the tests. Most medications are likely to react differently in different species, making it hard to know that just because it worked on the specimen if it’ll work on humans.
Animals put through the traumatic tests have no choice in anything and are deprived of living their natural wild life. When going through testing, the animals are put in cramped cages and are sometimes abused by their staff. According to the National Library of Medicine, it is morally unacceptable to use animals as tools when it is shown that they feel pain similarly to humans. Often, the pain and trauma put on the creature’s end in death or suffering until then.
Scientists who are for testing on animals may argue that the research gathered is essential to continue to discover more about diseases in animals and humans. It can benefit humans by keeping them safe and providing help in collecting data for researchers. However, the data can be obtained in other ways using cells and tissues rather than living creatures that feel pain. Even when it keeps people from being poked and prodded when a test works on an animal, it is still likely to fail in humans. The animals are usually ones kept as pets, but instead of living a life of being loved, they suffer every day.
Animal testing needs to be stopped, as there are alternatives like simulating cells, which are too unreliable to be trusted, and it causes the animals pain and suffering. Animal testing needs to be replaced with trustworthy alternatives internationally so that the creatures no longer have to live a life that is not natural.
