Gardner Edgerton High School’s softball team is doing better than ever. Softball is described as a quick moving game that lasts approximately 1 1/2 each game. The objective is to score the most runs and runs are scored when you reach home plate safely. The softball coach is Joanne Calvin.
“Softball is similar to baseball. We play with a 12 inch yellow softball, on a 200 foot field with four bases,” Calvin said.
Gardner has nine defensive positions and nine athletes on offense.
“When your team is ‘up to bat,’ you go through the line up until the other team’s defense gets 3 outs,” Calvin said.
Gardner’s Varsity softball program is 2-1 as of right now.
“We play 26 games between now and May 9,” Calvin said.
There is a varsity, JV and C team at Gardner Edgerton.
“Blazer softball players are hard working, team players. Majority of them play competitive softball year round, so high school ball is a little break from tournaments every weekend and a chance to play with their school friends,” Calvin said. “It is an honor to play for the Blazer Softball Program and these ladies have fun and compete.”
Calvin said that the softball program strives to be the best.
“They have several Regional Championships and a third place finish at State in 2016 and 2021,” Calvin said. “If anyone would like to participate in softball as a player or a manager, they need to try out at the beginning of the season. Season starts around the end of February every year. Students should also attend softball meetings throughout the year.”
