The Super Mario Galaxy movie had plenty of ups and downs to experience while watching. Its pros were many, but so were its cons.
For starters, the easter eggs and cameos were everywhere. Video game enthusiasts will be excited to see their favorite characters, like ROB, King Wart, Fox McCloud, and even Pikmin! There were other Mario game characters as well, but I don’t want to spoil it too much.
The cast was solid, with the originals all coming back, albeit with some new characters getting different voice actors, like Yoshi. Solid casting choices, although some of the original talent have been replaced.
The plot was… a little dry, sadly. It was decent enough to follow along, but could have used some guidance and been a little thicker. The story was enjoyable, but not very deep.
There were some questions I had about what the characters could have done and why some of their motivations were all over the place. Questions about what characters could have done/handled abound, and motivations seemed all over the place.
Some characters barely have any good screen time and story, and others from the first movie just appear once and then are gone. A few just exist for the cameo, or as an excuse for characters to disappear.
Some characters’ developmental arcs were weird, but some were understandable, and the nostalgia will get to you, along with plenty of moments to laugh at.
Overall, this movie is decent, but not the best. Should you watch it, though? Absolutely, because you might have an entirely different point of view than this review does.
