Spring is here. The sun and weather feels nice, and many athletes walk out from the locker room getting ready to show their capabilities for spring sports.
From baseball to boys’ tennis, many athletes prepare their gear having jittery feelings thinking about how much improvement they’ve had since last year.
David Ferreira, a sophomore baseball player, has been playing in the baseball club and school.
“It’s just what I grew up with, what everything around me was based on. Everyone is inspired to be in Venezuela. I play for the school to represent Gardner Edgerton and try to have a family sense community,” Ferreira said. “Baseball is a second home for me and I would like that at the school. This year I am looking to develop more. If I don’t make varsity it doesn’t mean I’m a failure, I’ll just work hard in the off season and make my coaches see my ability as a player.”
Jackson Fry a sophomore varsity runner who first started out as a rookie runner in seventh grade track and field.
“I found out I was good at running during my 7th grade year of track. The community really made me stick with it,” Fry said. “Running is the one activity that pushed me and kept me fit. The people made it feel more like a family than just like a friend group. Especially integrating into a high school and being new to things. I hope I can continue developing as a runner with my friends and push myself harder. Knowing that I’ve been training and doing cross country for the past years now.”
Leah Bridgewater a sophomore who’s been a pole vaulting for a while improving each day showing coach capability as an athlete and an honors student.
“My dad pole vaulted in high school, and I grew to like the sport,” Bridgewater said. “I want people to notice I’ve been working hard to improve the vault, mainly the people who supported me throughout my journey. It’s a good thing that our team has gotten small because coaches can really help people to improve. There’s less supplies being taken away, more time for people who really want to improve and have a strong community.
