Mental wellness affects more than you think. The month of January is Mental Wellness Month. Mental wellness is an active state of mind where you can cope with stress and work productively. Many people around the world struggle with their mental health and wellness.
“Globally, it is estimated that one in seven (14.3%) of 10–19-year-olds experience mental health conditions (1), yet these remain largely unrecognized and untreated,” the World Health Organization (WHO) said.
Many teens struggle with mental wellness in some way. Unfortunately, those numbers are on the rise.
“The number of adolescents reporting poor mental health is increasing,” the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.
There is a way to help out those who struggle. One place a person could find help is at school.
“While the expectation is that schools provide education, they also provide opportunities for youth to engage in physical activity and academic, social, mental health, and physical health services, all of which can relieve stress and help protect against negative outcomes,” the CDC said.
Physical health plays a crucial role in a person’s well-being as a whole. Physical wellness includes things such as exercising and eating healthy.
“Several studies, including one published in the American Journal of Public Health, show the positive effects a healthy diet and regular exercise have on mental wellbeing,” the National Council for Mental Wellbeing said.
Not only can a school help youths engage in activities, it can also foster relationships and communication skills.
“Building strong bonds and relationships with adults and friends at school, at home and in the community provides youth with a sense of connectedness,” the CDC said.
While communication and physical wellness play a crucial role in overall mental wellness, creative outlets such as painting can also help cope with overwhelming emotions.
“Share how journaling, creating art or music, or finding a new hobby such as cooking, can vastly improve inner peace and joy,” the National Council for Mental Wellbeing said.
Mental wellness is an important part of a person’s daily life. It can affect many aspects during the day. “It’s common to feel overwhelmed, and important to know that we aren’t alone,” the National Council for Mental Wellbeing said.
