Gardner Edgerton High School has a Latino Spanish Club. Matthew Mayeske, history and hurdle coach for the track team, proposed the creation of the Latino Spanish Club.
Why did you start this club, and how did you come up with this club
“I started this club because a few students at GEHS approached me about sponsoring it. While I am not myself Hispanic or Latino, I care deeply about allowing all students the opportunity to feel and build community in their own way,” Mayeske said.
What do you guys do during your club meetings?
“During meetings, we plan events, such as food sales, school spirit, and cultural activities for the student body, issues pertinent to Hispanics and Latinos in our area of Kansas and in our school in general, as well as generally build community amongst one another by giving a space for these wonderful students to hang out and just exist freely,” Mayeske said.
What kinds of stuff do you guys do for the club and for the school?
“We do tons as a club. Create cultural activities for the school, such as celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and Dia De Los Muertos (and other Hispanic/Latino celebrations) by holding Spirit Weeks and festivals, food and bake sales of Hispanic cultural items, and collaborating with other clubs to create cultural awareness initiatives within our community,” Mayeske said.
