Hitting the holiday rush

Band students prepare for winter concert

The band is busy this season preparing for their holiday concert on December 10th. Instructor William Biggs is hard at work making sure they are ready to go come concert time. The practice is still in its early stages but is moving right along according to Biggs.
“Right now we are sight-reading concert music,” Biggs said. “We have decided what we are going to play and now we will dissect the parts to work out all the details.”
The concert songs Biggs has planned are traditional holiday music.
“We are playing a variety of songs but they are mostly Christmas based,” Biggs said.
“The Hanukah Song should make an appearance as well as some non-holiday songs.”
According to him, the time spent preparing for the winter concert will not impact the concert band’s performances coming second semester.
“Right now I am looking for music that will fit well with our band for those contests but the students are focused on the music for this concert right now,” Biggs said.
Senior Flute player Sarah Woods has been in band for her entire high school career. She knows what she has to do to prepare for concerts.
“I go in during seminars and play,” Woods said. “I especially take time for the harder parts of the music.”
Woods originally joined band due to her older brother.
“He was in band, and when I was younger, I just wanted to be like him,” Woods said.
The band is yet another activity busy this year in GEHS, meeting during class periods as well as extra practice sections available before and after school, and during seminar.
