Football is loved by lots of people, and Gardner Edgerton is no exception to that. Gardner Edgerton went up against Derby high school and won the state championship. Jesse Owen, Head Football Coach was proud to bring the trophy home.
This was the second time Owen has won state, the last time being at his old school. Gardner held a pep assembly at Gardner Edgerton High School on Friday, December 1 to celebrate and a parade honoring the win as well on Sunday, December 3.
“It is hard to describe the emotions [of winning], it’s a mix of joy and pride,” Owen said.
Though Gardner Edgerton has gone to state before, this is the first time they have won state championship.
The winning score was 22-19 with Colton Hawkinson throwing a final touchdown to give the Blazers a lead.
“When we watched Manhattan win last year, that’s when our season started,” Owen said.
Besides winning, players talked about how this experience was once in a lifetime, they talk about the shock of it snowing and losing at first.
“Don’t let the score change the game, [try] your best, no matter the score,” Owen said
Besides winning, the biggest surprise to the players was how many people came to support them.
The game started 13-0 with the Panthers beating the Blazers until the second quarter.
The season finished with a 12-1 record.
