Supreme Court takes bathroom case

Even though the Supreme Court lost judge Antonin Scalia last year and has yet to replace him, the Supreme Court has decided to take up a case that is very relevant to the 2016 era. Before now, the Supreme Court was trying to stay out of the commotion caused by this issue.

The case was brought to the court’s attention by transgender student Gavin Grimm in Virginia, who was forced to use unisex bathrooms or the facilities in the nurse’s office. He was originally allowed to use the boys bathroom after transitioning in 2014, but the community expressed outrage at this.

The courts in Virginia sided with Grimm after an appeal. However, because of all the controversy around the issue, it will be dealt with on a federal level.

“I will do everything I can to make sure that other transgender students don’t have to go through the same experience,” Grimm said according to CNN.com.

The lawyers opposite of Grimm stated that since transgenders take up such a small portion of the population, the school should do its best to protect that majority. A school board meeting finally decided that Grimm should be barred from using the boys bathroom.

If the Supreme court rules in Grimm’s favor he will be able to use the boys bathroom at the school and, likely, wherever else he goes in life. If they rule against him, he will have to continue to use the unisex bathrooms that the school has provided.

A court date has not been set yet and it is likely that the case will not be brought to court until there are nine judges on the bench once again.
