SME student sexually assaulted

On Sept. 20, a 14-year-old female student at Shawnee Mission East was sexually assaulted by another student in the boys’ bathroom.
According to Fox4, the incident started out as horseplay between the female student and two male students. One male student stood outside the door to keep it locked while the other male sexually assaulted the female.
SME senior Katie Kulhman started the movement #WearBlackToStopAttacks on social media to spread awareness and it spread across the state.
“We were thinking [of ways] to show the student body we support both this victim and every other unnamed victim,” Kulhman said in an interview on Fox4.
In an email to the parents, the principal of Shawnee Mission East said “I want to assure you that there is nothing more important to the Shawnee Mission School District and Shawnee Mission East than the safety of our students.”
