‘Logan’ Review

Haydon M Wyant, Staff Writer

It is with a heavy heart that I begin this review of the critically acclaimed “Logan”, which is the last movie that will star Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine and Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, better known as Professor X. Watching the trailers which so beautifully utilized Johnny Cash’s rendition of the song ‘Hurt’ which really sets the tone for the whole movie. Going into it knowing that this movie is the epic conclusion of two characters that are close to our hearts sets the bar really damn high. This is how it goes.

The movie starts up with… Well. Not the movie. The opening for “Logan” was actually a trailer for the upcoming Deadpool movie which was excellent. The only way to fully appreciate this opening is to see it for yourself. As aforementioned, entering the theater ready for the beginning of the end, it was a fantastic light-hearted way to kick it off.

Immediately not only are we reminded that this movie is rated ‘R’ but that this Logan is much older and very sick. He starts to, frankly, get the shit kicked out of him until he goes into a blinding rage cutting off somebody’s hand, another guy’s leg, and then slamming his claws straight through another person’s skull.

The plot progresses to where Logan is currently living and how he is caring for the old, frail and senile Charles. Logan’s main struggle throughout the movie is whether or not to use the remaining days he has on Earth for the greater good one last time. The two and a half hour story is an incredibly strong aspect of the movie but it is difficult to describe without giving too much away.

This movie does what it was designed to do; give a well deserved send off to two beloved characters. This movie was so much to digest not necessarily because the movie itself is sad (even though it really is), but because it’s more than just watching story arcs come to a close on screen. It’s losing a friend. It’s losing characters who have been in our lives through cinema for decades and being forced to cope with that.

All in all, this is one of the greatest superhero movies I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Not because it was just a great superhero movie, but because it was just an incredible movie to begin with. Logan is a well deserved 97/100.
