Mallory Gevertez of Johnson County Mental Health Center is here to give us tips and advice on how to spot depression, how to help with depression, and treatments for depression.
Gevertez states that “persistent sadness, hopelessness, or fatigue.” are some traits of suicide. Other traits include fatigue, oversleeping or under sleeping, and an obsession with death.
She provided with several important and helpful tips on ways to help someone.
“Listen without judgment,” Gevertez said. “Allow the person to talk about how they are feeling.”
Other ways to help include taking signs seriously and encouraging professional help.
According to Gevertez treatments for suicide include ”Lifestyle approaches (exercise, balanced diet, consistent sleep, reducing alcohol or substance use)”, therapy, medication from doctors, stress management, and medical evaluation.
Ways to help can range from simply being there, and offering support, listening actively, and offering practical support.
Always remember: it gets better, and there is always someone out there that can help you– no matter wherever you are.
