Devin Roger is the new Spanish teacher and a first-year teacher.
People in our lives can have a great impact on our lives that could change the course of our lives.
“My mom is actually a teacher,” Roger said. “My mom was a teacher. An elementary school teacher my entire life, pretty much. So that was a big influence on me.”
Slowly, you start to realize what you’re good at and what you like to do.
“But going to school and realizing how much I enjoy learning. And how much I enjoy helping others with that,” Roger said.
People have different callings and reasons they teach.
“I was asked by a friend one day where my grandma was from, and I didn’t know the answer to that question,” Roger said. “My grandma […] she’s my reason for learning Spanish. I wanted to connect with my roots, my heritage. And the quickest way to do that was to start learning the language.”
Adapting to a new environment is important, but it can take time.
“So I am used to the desert,” Roger said. “You know, 100 degrees is nice and cool. You know, it gets to 120 on a hot day sometimes. And very cold, but never any snow. So getting used to that in Lawrence was very different.”
Opportunities are good to have, and we have to take full advantage of them.
“But coming here to a school like Gartner, it just shows the vast difference in how much the kids can do when there’s actual the ability for them to prosper and the ability for them to do what they want to do,” Roger said. “And I’m a really big fan of their dual paths. That college isn’t the only thing.”
