Advanced Placement classes, or AP classes for short, are some of the hardest classes here at GEHS, but in turn they will give college credit to those who do well in the class. This makes these classes popular.
AP classes can seem very intimidating to those who haven’t taken one before, so here is a rundown of what AP classes are like and tips for them from AP students.
While AP classes are harder than regular classes they can share a lot of the similar content, especially in history classes.
“Content-wise, AP classes are no more difficult than I expected,” junior Jude Meili said. “ In terms of workload, AP classes took more energy than I thought they would.”
Since AP classes take more time due to their increased workload they can lead to people not finding as much enjoyment in personal interests due to a lack of energy. With the big workload it can also be difficult to catch up if you get behind.
“Do not procrastinate and get work turned in on time. Create a group chat with your class and work together,” sophomore Addison Beruan said.
A good way to do well in AP classes is to pay close attention to lectures, Junior Alyssa Yanez said. If you need some extra help understanding the material you could also watch review videos.
“The main tip I have for getting through AP classes is to look up review videos on YouTube,” Meili said. “When I was preparing for my AP exams, I watched several review videos on YouTube. Each time I would see the content in a new way, and the ideas would stick in my brain much more.”
AP classes prepare students for what actual classes in college are like, something that is helpful to students that are college bound.
“I would recommend (them) because it is a good way to get college credit sooner,” Yanez said.
Although, taking too many of these classes can cause burnout and harm to a student’s mental health.
“I would recommend that people take AP classes selectively. There are few reasons to take every AP class,” Meili said. “If you are skeptical whether or not you will be able to handle multiple AP classes then do not try to do too much. If you do, you will end up struggling and not enjoying what you learn.”
While difficult, AP classes aren’t impossible and are well worth the effort needed.
