USD231 has decided to get these new locks installed on classroom doors in the event intruders were to attempt to break into the classrooms.
“The district decided to do the locks within the last three months. They started installing them about two weeks ago,” Anthony Taylor, assistant principal, said.
These locks getting installed are NightLocks and they are designed to keep the classrooms safer and make it harder to try to get into the classroom.
“These locks are supposed to help if in case there’s an Intruder Alert,” Taylor said. “These locks are to help barricade the doors so no one can get in.”
The locks are supposed to go into a slot from the bottom of the door to the floor where there is an opening for the lock to fit into.
“It’s a lock that is actually on the wall that you grab and then slides into the floor and the door,” Taylor said. “It barricades the door and will not let the door open at all from the outside.”
The Olathe School District installed these NightLocks in 2023. Kansas City Television KSHB41 did a story on the locks that were installed in that district. Brent Kiger, Director of Safety Services at the Olathe Public Schools, told the station that the locks were installed to prevent teachers from having to move furniture in front the doors to stop intruders.
