If you’re looking for a movie that has it all, thrilling tennis action, juicy drama, and unforgettable characters, “Challengers” is the film you absolutely cannot miss.
Tashi, a former tennis prodigy turned coach, played by Zendaya, helped her husband (Mike Faist) become a champion. However, to break out of a losing streak, he must confront his ex-best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend (Josh O’Connor). I had never seen a sports movie with a romantic theme before, so it was a refreshing experience. The film is packed with action-filled sports scenes that are entertaining to watch, but it also has a lot of romance mixed in. This made the movie stand out from any other romance movie I have watched before. Our leads spend most of their time treating each other poorly. This makes it difficult for an audience to connect with any of them, or root for any particular outcome since the characters don’t come off as very likable. It’s hard to tell what would be the best outcome for any of the characters. Speaking of outcomes, the ending of this film was extremely dramatic, and it required me to pay close attention to fully understand it. This could make it confusing for most viewers. The ending added an extra layer of unpredictability to an already unpredictable movie, but it was also a bit silly, confusing, and odd all at the same time. The ending also made “Challengers” much longer than it needed to be. It could have easily been a 2-hour movie. There were also some rated R moments that are inappropriate for children that you should be cautious of. Many people love the film, it has an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.8/10 on IMDb. I would personally rate the film an 8/10 because it checks all my boxes for entertaining romance movies. Overall, I highly recommend this film. It has become one of my top five favorites. If you enjoy a good love triangle, combined with sports, then you will definitely enjoy this movie. |
