Not many people are born on leap day: February 29. The day comes only once every four years, so the odds of being born on it are very slim. However, there are still people who are born on that day, and sophomore Skylynn Eden is one of them.
“[Being born on leap day] doesn’t feel that different, but I will say, you get a lot of comments about it when you bring it up,” Eden said. “So those can get a little annoying from time to time.”
Since leap year only comes on occasion, Eden usually celebrates her birthday on February 28th.
“[Most years] I celebrate [my birthday] on the 28th of February, just because I want to keep it in the same month and it’s just one day earlier,” Eden said.
According to Eden, her mother did not want her to be born on leap day. However, when she was born then she did not get too upset.
“[Leap day] was the one day [my mother] did not want me to be born,” Eden said. “She knew a young boy in her neighborhood when she was little that was born [then] and he used to get bullied for it. But then I was born February 29th and I don’t think she was that upset or that excited.”
After some time, the reactions Eden would get when telling people her birthday began to revolve around her age.
“I think after a while [the reactions to my birthday] just got really dumb,” Eden said. “Because I always just get, ‘You’re really young to be in this grade.’ Or ‘You’re really smart to be two years old.’”
Eden thinks that the best part of having a leap day birthday is that it is a bigger celebration when she finally gets to celebrate her birthday on the actual date she was born.
“[The best part about having my birthday is] probably when I finally get to have my real birthday,” Eden said. “It’s a bigger celebration than every other birthday. Like, for my eighth birthday, when I had my second first real birthday, I went to Disney [World].”
Up until now, Eden has celebrated three birthdays on her actual birth date, and this year she will be celebrating her fourth.
“So far I’ve had three [birthdays on the actual day I was born],” Eden said. “But I will be having my fourth [one this year].”
