After teaching automotive classes in Lawrence Raymond Casey has moved to a new environment and is now teaching automotive classes in GEHS.
Needing a change Ray decided to start working here.
“I was just looking for a little bit of a change and this was better pay and it’s closer to my house,” Ray said
Ray is no stranger to teaching as he has been teaching high schoolers for nine years.
“I was an automotive instructor for Lawrence Public Schools,” Ray said.
Ray has grown up around automotives since he was young, which sparked his interest in them.
“I kind of grew up around a shop. My dad worked with us at [a] Mechanic,” Ray said.
Ray teaches Auto Info, General Services One, General Services Two, and General Services Three.
“My goal is to have you ready to just walk into a dealership and turn keys,” he said. “So, just get in there and start working. You should know how to do the basic stuff as well as take care of your own vehicle.”
Ray is determined to try and get the automotive classes college credits.
“Yeah, so what I did at my previous job was I got their high school program college nationally accredited so that my students would leave with… like ten or eleven free college credits through JUCO,” he said.
Ray is also in the process of buying better tools for the automotive program.
“I want to get you guys some nicer tools and stuff like that, so I’m working on it now. It’s gonna be a slow transition because you can’t just go buy all professional for six boxes, it’s just too much money,” Ray said. “You got to do it a box at a time.”
Ray feels that knowing the basics of cars is very important.
“I think you need to be able to take care of your car rather than be at the mercy of somebody else,” Ray said.
Ray can be found in the ATC building.
