After years of teaching at middle school, Gretl Shelton decided to return to high school and teach English 10 at Gardner Edgerton. Shelton’s goal for this year is to improve the sophomore’s writing skills.
“I consider myself basically a writing coach and a speaking coach,” Shelton said.
Shelton majored in English Lit and Theater and Speech Communications. Shelton went to high school in Southern Eastern Kansas.
“I wanted to become a teacher because a student said I would make a great teacher,” Shelton said.
This is Shelton’s 28th year of teaching.
Shelton went to three different universities such as the University of Kansas and then transferred to Wichita State University, and got her master’s through Friends University.
Shelton’s favorite book is “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens.
“I think we need to be teaching Dickens..” Shelton said.
Shelton describes her classroom as direct.
“I like to nip things quickly,” Shelton said.
Shelton has a husband named Don and two daughters. One of her daughters wanted to be a teacher.
Shelton describes herself as approachable and someone you could talk to.
